Over the past six years of my life, I have devoted a great amount of time to web development and design. I have been doing freelance webdesign for quite some time and although I am typically unable to do anything for my personal projects that I find pleasing, I usually always come up with something to impress everyone else.
I was doing a little bit of statistical research on a few of my larger websites tonight and I noticed some crazy trends that I haven’t expected to see lately. Even though larger monitors, upgraded video cards and all around nicer computing platforms is the cause, I am extremely pleased to see larger resolutions taking over.
According to the statistics for justinshattuck.com, 800×600, what used to be the standard for web design resolutions has dropped from first, second to ninth place! High definition resolution, native and not has risen above it! I find it absolutely fantastic.
I remember designing websites for Jackson Technical and Creative Solutions that were all within the 770 pixel wide parameter with a 15pixel padding on both sides. However, this was a little before CSS really took flight. I am proud to say that I have not been designing under that requirement for quite some time.
Anyone have any aspirations or theories as to what the next big change will be? We’ve seen large scale websites and corporations incorporate and migrate to CSS/XHTML. The trend of resolutions increasing has obviously been present. I’m curious what the next step is. Ajax on everything? I have no opinions right now. Curious of yours!!

1YEAH! I’m in that 2.21 pct that uses 1280×960. I like the way it looks. I’m also very glad to see people have moved out of the dark ages of 800×600.

2I use 1280×1024 and 1440×900
I don’t like the 960 appearance, seems narrow to me.

3Actually, paying a bit of attention to the graph, you’ll notice 1024×768 — pretty much one step up from 800×600 is the primary resolution in use, at least by the visitors for my website.
However, I also average around 20,000 to 25,000 visitors per week. So roughtly 8k of those users or so are using 1024×768. Not too bad I guess, but its only one step up from 800×600.
I would really like to see say, 1280x *** take control!
