5Great idea! I installed this plugin, but it doesn’t seem to work with my wordpress installation. I tried leaving a fake comment myself, but I didn’t get the thank you message.
I don’t blame the plugin for this. Maybe something is screwed up with my server. Recently it stopped sending automatic daily backups :(
Any help, would be deeply appreciated. Ah.. one last thing, I guess you’ve installed this plugin on this blog, so I get a chance to see your thank you message :P

6Yet another doubt, What if comment moderation is enabled? Will the commentator receive the thank you message instantaneously or show we approve his comment to sent the thank you message?
Justin
March 21st, 2007 at 2:15 pm
7@Tuan Tran: Yes, I developed and released the plugin here.
@Thilak: If comment moderation is enabled the message is not sent until the comment is added as an active comment on the thread.

Thank your Commentators using Comment Relish Plugin
March 25th, 2007 at 10:04 pm
12[…] It’s a good idea to thank your readers for leaving comments visit via email. Now you can automate the entire process of thanking your commentators using Comment Relish Plugin by Justin Shattuck. The plugin is very useful in building a community of faithful commentators around your blog without any work, so that you could focus more on your content rather than spending time to thank your readers manually. The plugin is quite smart, it sends thank-you emails to only new commentators and it won’t do the same for all commentators. […]

14Justin.
This is awesome. Just what I wanted. The only change I’ve made is to have it always send the emails to me first. I then “adjust” them if I want to, and then forward them on.
That way I can catch things like the name field not being quite right (”Hi Fred Smith” doesn’t make as much sense or sound as good as “Hi Fred”, etc).
I put their email address at the top of the body of the email, so I can easily hit “forward”, and cut-and-paste it into the “to” field.
Sure, it’s a little work, but it makes me feel more comfortable knowing it really was “personalized” by me… to some degree anyway.
Well done!

15I like this plug-in a lot and it idealy works with my site except for one horrific error I have discovered….
The plug administration is available to anyone with the low security rate of ‘Contributor’. This means even a contributor can change your message (presumably to spam if they choose), they can switch the plug-in off, change email address, and goodness knows what else.
Can you change your code to prevent this major lapse in security please as I would like very much to use this plug-in
kind regards
Anthony

16Hey Justin thanks for the awesome plugin!
Quick note though: what’s the deal with handling apostrophes? Like if I type in the message ” Alaeddin’s Blog ” the plugin converts that to ” Alaeddin\’s Blog “. That also makes it impossible to embed HTML tags as the plugin will convert double quotes as well.

Why don’t you do some troubleshooting on your own before expecting everyone else to do it for you? Then you can have something useful to contribute rather than bitching on someone’s blog.

41I have been using your great plugin for a while now, and I just got this error. It took down my entire site! All of a sudden, when I loaded my blog, I got this message:
The e-mail could not be sent.
Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function…
I had to rename comment-relish.php to get my site back up again. When I took a look at the comment relish database in mysql, there was a bunch of fake emails in there. My theory: All the spam comments that Akismet has caught are getting sent one of my comment relish emails. Most of them are undeliverable, so they get backed up in a queue and eventually a limit is crossed and the site goes down.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this? I’d love to continue using this plugin, but my site immediately goes down whenver I reactivate it.
Thanks!

47I’m having exactly the same problem using this plugin as J-Ro. I’m definitely having some fake e-mail adresses in the comments, so this could be really a possible reason.
The plugin was working for like 30mins, but then went down with the above mentioned error message:
“The e-mail could not be sent.
Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function…”
The plugin seems to be really cool and useful and I’d like to use it, but can’t for now. A fix or workaround would be great :)

The installation phase put such a strain on my database server as it was pulling out commenters’ email addresses to put into a new table that it crashed. Plug-in uninstalled. I only have about 8,000 comments –I’d suggest optimizing your queries or coming up with a different solution for verifying whether an email address is new.

Top 5 methods to increase comments on your blog « metavn Blog
September 21st, 2007 at 7:53 am
88[…] Top 5 methods to increase comments on your blog September 20th, 2007 — metavn Comments mean a lot to any blogger, they not just kick off interaction, but also help in boosting organic traffic. Blogs usually have a larger ratio of readers than commentators. Readers who just read, but do not interact through comments are called Lurkers. By providing incentives like Gifts and link backs, you can encourage lurkers to start leaving comments on your blog regularly. Here’s a list of top five methods to convert lurkers into commentators:Provide Link Incentives: Commentators are most likely to be bloggers themselves, so they’ll be hungry for links. You can make them happy by giving free linkbacks for leaving comments. You can make use of the following Wordpress Plugins to provide link incentives:Show Top Commentators: This plugin will show a list of Top Commentators along with a link back to the commentator’s blog. You can easily manipulate this plugin to reset daily or once a week or month.Link Love: By default, Wordpress adds nofollow to all links (including the name) in your comments. This plugin will remove nofollow and provide link incentives for commenting on your blog. Note: You’ll have to make announcement regarding the plugin on your blog, else your readers might not be aware of the change.Notify your readers with latest comments: Whenever someone leaves a comment on your blog. He expects somebody to respond to his comment. By default, Wordpress offers comment notification by RSS, but many users are not comfortable with this option. In this scenario, sending notification via email makes complete sense. Thanks to Subscribe to Comments plugin which sends new comment notification via email and encourages your commentators to comeback and respond.Give away free invites or gifts: Alternatively, you can also encourage comments by giving away invites or gifts to top commentator. This will create a sense of competition among your readers to leave comments.Promote comments in feeds / ask for comments: If you have good number of RSS readers, you can promote comments in feed by adding a short line like “Read or Add your comments” below each entry. Unfortunately, no Wordpress plugin is available for this. You’ll have to manually hack wp-rss.php and add this line. Be careful while playing with wp-rss.php (always have a backup).Additionally, you can also encourage comments by asking questions within your posts. Something like “Good or Bad, I’ll leave that to you” or “What are your thoughts over this” is much more than enough.Thank your commentator: Finally, you can thank your new commentator for leaving comments. This gives them a godly feeling about you and encourages them to come back and leave more comments. You can either do this manually or automate the process of thanking by adopting a Wordpress plugin can Comment Relish (Read the plugin review). This post is a part of Darren’s Top 5 Group Writing Project. 94[…] Use plugins that attract more comments - There are a couple of other plugins in addition to the Show Top Commentators WordPress and Subscribe to Comments that you can make use of to attract more comments from your readers. These are Comment Relish and Brian’s Threaded Comments. The Comment Relish plugin sends a thank-you email to your blog’s first time commentators. This will surely encourage them to come back again and comment regularly. Brian’s Threaded plugin adds a ‘Reply to this comment’ link to every comment which means, your comment is placed directly under the comment you replied to. This plugin make comments easier to follow and also prevents readers from scrolling down to look for answers to their questions. […]

Voi incerca sa fiu mai comunicativ instaland aceste plugin-uri. Cel putin asha sper…

It’s ironic that the creator of Comment Relish isn’t replying to people who comment on his site (or perhaps they’re getting automated support emails!). Otherwise, it’s a great idea and something I would love to have once it has been fixed.

Comment relish plugin - Pros and Cons
February 13th, 2008 at 7:11 am
149[…] Many of the bloggers in the blogosphere might be knowing about the Comment relish plugin, if not then here is a close-up about the plugin - Comment relish plugin is an auto function by which a thanks giving mail is sent to the commenter who has posted a comment for the first time in your blog. This message can be customized in the admin panel plugin options. This plugin has been considered as one of the good ways to make people subscribe to your blog! As in the message, the blog author can include his Email subscription link and most of the times the commentor subscribes seeing the good response from the blogger. Also this plugin helps in attracting the commentor once again to come and comment in the blog, which is explained as one of the ways to increase comments in the blog as said by JohnTP. This plugin is also considered as a way of turning one time commentors into RSS subscribers by easy wordpress. […]

156J-Ro and others, I found the fix to the the bug. If this plugin couses the following error for you:
The e-mail could not be sent.
Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function…
Here’s the solution:
1. Open the comment-relish.php file in your favourite text editor.
2. Find line 244 (or just search for “e-mail could not be sent”).
3. Add two forward slashes (”//”) to the beginning of the line or remove the line completely.
4. Save the file and upload it as you normally would.

158[…] Comment Relish - This is a great plug-in that will send an email to the person commenting on your website as a ‘thank you’ for taking the time out of their day to write a comment. Definitely a great way to help the connection between you and your readers. Add to Facebook - I just finished up a website for a client and used this plug-in and it works like a charm! Facebook is growing daily as a place to mingle with other people and adding this function makes it so easy for your visitors to send your link to friends on facebook. Added exposure is always a good thing, right? WP E-Commerce - I haven’t had the chance to test this one personally, but I hear lots of good things about it. Interested in using wordpress to power your e-commerce websites? This is the plug-in you need. Add User Photo - Andrew put together an awesome plug-in that allows all of your authors and anyone else who signs up at your wordpress website to add a photo to their profile. Very easy to integrate them into your comments as well instead of using Gravatar. SEO Friendly Images - You can never add enough resources to your website for SEO purposes and one that I feel a lot of people overlook is the alt and title tags for images. Now, this plug-in does it for you. Downloads Manager - This plug-in allows you to easily manage and track downloads you’re offering your visitors. I am currently adding this to the wordpress hut website for some custom plug-ins and themes I’m creating for you all. *more on this soon Link A Dink - In the world of private advertising on your websites, this plug-in is a God send. The plug-in gives you the ability to automatically assing URL’s with words in your posts. So if you wanted Bootstrapping to automatically link to an advertisers website, you add it into the options panel and it does it automatically. Buddy Love - This plug-in allows snippets from recent posts of links on your blogroll to be displayed. I’m currently switching the “Around the Web” plug-in on the right side to feature this plug-in so look out for it there in the next day or two. Twitter This - I have to admit, I haven’t even looked at Twitter yet, but I hear everyone loves it This will be a good plug-in for those of you who know your reader base uses twitter. Allow them to share your blog posts on twitter. WP Polls - This plug-in allows you to easily integrate polls on your website. I find that this works really well on the sidebar, especially if you’re updating the poll once per week and then making a post with the results. It will help keep your visitors eyes on your sidebar, which in turn is great for advertising. […]
