Visitors love interaction, especially a personable approach at gaining their attention and spiking their interests. Increasing the overall readership of your blog revolves primarily around content, accessibility and presentation. In an attempt to gain return readers and possibly subscribers, I present Comment Relish.
Comment relish is a Wordpress plugin developed to send an e-mail message to users who comment on your website who have never commented before. The message dispatched to the user is defined within the plugin’s preferences. Numerous tags have been integrated to allow for information to be included in the message easily (I.E.: timestamp, author name, comment, ETC.).

12Great idea! I installed this plugin, but it doesn’t seem to work with my wordpress installation. I tried leaving a fake comment myself, but I didn’t get the thank you message.
I don’t blame the plugin for this. Maybe something is screwed up with my server. Recently it stopped sending automatic daily backups :(
Any help, would be deeply appreciated. Ah.. one last thing, I guess you’ve installed this plugin on this blog, so I get a chance to see your thank you message :P

Justin

25Justin.
This is awesome. Just what I wanted. The only change I’ve made is to have it always send the emails to me first. I then “adjust” them if I want to, and then forward them on.
That way I can catch things like the name field not being quite right (”Hi Fred Smith” doesn’t make as much sense or sound as good as “Hi Fred”, etc).
I put their email address at the top of the body of the email, so I can easily hit “forward”, and cut-and-paste it into the “to” field.
Sure, it’s a little work, but it makes me feel more comfortable knowing it really was “personalized” by me… to some degree anyway.
Well done!
-Alister

34I like this plug-in a lot and it idealy works with my site except for one horrific error I have discovered….
The plug administration is available to anyone with the low security rate of ‘Contributor’. This means even a contributor can change your message (presumably to spam if they choose), they can switch the plug-in off, change email address, and goodness knows what else.
Can you change your code to prevent this major lapse in security please as I would like very much to use this plug-in
kind regards

35Hey Justin thanks for the awesome plugin!
Quick note though: what’s the deal with handling apostrophes? Like if I type in the message ” Alaeddin’s Blog ” the plugin converts that to ” Alaeddin\’s Blog “. That also makes it impossible to embed HTML tags as the plugin will convert double quotes as well.

Inntjeningstips: Gjør dine kommentarer mer personlige - Webforumet.no - Søkemotoroptimalisering, webutvikling og markedsføring
June 2nd, 2007 at 4:46 am

76I have been using your great plugin for a while now, and I just got this error. It took down my entire site! All of a sudden, when I loaded my blog, I got this message:
The e-mail could not be sent.
Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function…
I had to rename comment-relish.php to get my site back up again. When I took a look at the comment relish database in mysql, there was a bunch of fake emails in there. My theory: All the spam comments that Akismet has caught are getting sent one of my comment relish emails. Most of them are undeliverable, so they get backed up in a queue and eventually a limit is crossed and the site goes down.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this? I’d love to continue using this plugin, but my site immediately goes down whenver I reactivate it.
Thanks!

91I’m having exactly the same problem using this plugin as J-Ro. I’m definitely having some fake e-mail adresses in the comments, so this could be really a possible reason.
The plugin was working for like 30mins, but then went down with the above mentioned error message:

The plugin seems to be really cool and useful and I’d like to use it, but can’t for now. A fix or workaround would be great :)

The plugin is called Comment Relish and it’s one of the easiest plugins I’ve encountered in terms of installation (just upload it to the plugins folder). Better yet, the concept and use is nearly as simple as the install! Whenever a new person comments on your blog, it sends them an automated email with your customized message. I’ve set it up to thank the commenter for visiting and to ask them to consider subscribing to the blog. The email will only go out once per person (I’m not a fan of filling readers’ inboxes with useless crap) and will provide yet another personal touch to your website. [...]

I have quite a few people that comment on the site and I have seen blogs that have 1000 commentators use this, so if your site is larger than that, then this script may not work as well for you. 172As others, plugin crashed my site (a couple days after I installed it, so I didnt even know what the cause was).
You should really post a warning about this…my site is still in construction and doesnt get very many visitors (and thus, not too many spammers) and yet it crashed the site.
I really liked the plugin, and hope to use it again when this issue is fixed!

Top 5 methods to increase comments on your blog « metavn Blog
September 21st, 2007 at 7:53 am
178[...] Top 5 methods to increase comments on your blog September 20th, 2007 — metavn Comments mean a lot to any blogger, they not just kick off interaction, but also help in boosting organic traffic. Blogs usually have a larger ratio of readers than commentators. Readers who just read, but do not interact through comments are called Lurkers. By providing incentives like Gifts and link backs, you can encourage lurkers to start leaving comments on your blog regularly. Here’s a list of top five methods to convert lurkers into commentators:Provide Link Incentives: Commentators are most likely to be bloggers themselves, so they’ll be hungry for links. You can make them happy by giving free linkbacks for leaving comments. You can make use of the following Wordpress Plugins to provide link incentives:Show Top Commentators: This plugin will show a list of Top Commentators along with a link back to the commentator’s blog. You can easily manipulate this plugin to reset daily or once a week or month.Link Love: By default, Wordpress adds nofollow to all links (including the name) in your comments. This plugin will remove nofollow and provide link incentives for commenting on your blog. Note: You’ll have to make announcement regarding the plugin on your blog, else your readers might not be aware of the change.Notify your readers with latest comments: Whenever someone leaves a comment on your blog. He expects somebody to respond to his comment. By default, Wordpress offers comment notification by RSS, but many users are not comfortable with this option. In this scenario, sending notification via email makes complete sense. Thanks to Subscribe to Comments plugin which sends new comment notification via email and encourages your commentators to comeback and respond.Give away free invites or gifts: Alternatively, you can also encourage comments by giving away invites or gifts to top commentator. This will create a sense of competition among your readers to leave comments.Promote comments in feeds / ask for comments: If you have good number of RSS readers, you can promote comments in feed by adding a short line like “Read or Add your comments†below each entry. Unfortunately, no Wordpress plugin is available for this. You’ll have to manually hack wp-rss.php and add this line. Be careful while playing with wp-rss.php (always have a backup).Additionally, you can also encourage comments by asking questions within your posts. Something like “Good or Bad, I’ll leave that to you†or “What are your thoughts over this†is much more than enough.Thank your commentator: Finally, you can thank your new commentator for leaving comments. This gives them a godly feeling about you and encourages them to come back and leave more comments. You can either do this manually or automate the process of thanking by adopting a Wordpress plugin can Comment Relish (Read the plugin review). This post is a part of Darren’s Top 5 Group Writing Project. If you are new here, please subscribe to our RSS feed or opt for email subscription. Thanks for reading! Posted in Blog Tips. [...]

Comment Relish : Casperize
September 28th, 2007 at 3:56 am
This will surely encourage them to come back again and comment regularly. Voi incerca sa fiu mai comunicativ instaland aceste plugin-uri. Cel putin asha sper…

209[...] Here’s a little info on the “latest” theme changes. (geezus I wonder if I’ll ever stop changing it?) Inspiration came from this color scheme. The font used in the little scalloped button is called La Portencia (de La Boca). Oh and the other day I commented for the first time on Sue’s blog and I got a little thank you email back, I thought that was so cool and figured it was a plugin since it didn’t get to me until she moderated the comment, so I did a little research and found this. It’ll send a little thank you email to first time commenters, which is totally customizable. Too cool for school. And I also installed the custom login plugin, mine is getting there, still needs a little work! And also the CommentLuv, plugin which I’m sure you’ve seen. It lists your last post in the comment you leave, and last, but not least I also installed the “do follow” plugin, because I mean seriously, DO FOLLOW. heh. And I think that’s about it. [...]

This message can be customized in the admin panel plugin options. This plugin has been considered as one of the good ways to make people subscribe to your blog! As in the message, the blog author can include his Email subscription link and most of the times the commentor subscribes seeing the good response from the blogger. Also this plugin helps in attracting the commentor once again to come and comment in the blog, which is explained as one of the ways to increase comments in the blog as said by JohnTP. This plugin is also considered as a way of turning one time commentors into RSS subscribers by easy wordpress. [...]

316J-Ro and others, I found the fix to the the bug. If this plugin couses the following error for you:
The e-mail could not be sent.
Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function…
Here’s the solution:
1. Open the comment-relish.php file in your favourite text editor.
2. Find line 244 (or just search for “e-mail could not be sent”).
3. Add two forward slashes (”//”) to the beginning of the line or remove the line completely.
4. Save the file and upload it as you normally would.

319[...] Comment Relish - This is a great plug-in that will send an email to the person commenting on your website as a ‘thank you’ for taking the time out of their day to write a comment. Definitely a great way to help the connection between you and your readers. Add to Facebook - I just finished up a website for a client and used this plug-in and it works like a charm! Facebook is growing daily as a place to mingle with other people and adding this function makes it so easy for your visitors to send your link to friends on facebook. Added exposure is always a good thing, right? WP E-Commerce - I haven’t had the chance to test this one personally, but I hear lots of good things about it. Interested in using wordpress to power your e-commerce websites? This is the plug-in you need. Add User Photo - Andrew put together an awesome plug-in that allows all of your authors and anyone else who signs up at your wordpress website to add a photo to their profile. Very easy to integrate them into your comments as well instead of using Gravatar. SEO Friendly Images - You can never add enough resources to your website for SEO purposes and one that I feel a lot of people overlook is the alt and title tags for images. Now, this plug-in does it for you. Downloads Manager - This plug-in allows you to easily manage and track downloads you’re offering your visitors. I am currently adding this to the wordpress hut website for some custom plug-ins and themes I’m creating for you all. *more on this soon Link A Dink - In the world of private advertising on your websites, this plug-in is a God send. The plug-in gives you the ability to automatically assing URL’s with words in your posts. So if you wanted Bootstrapping to automatically link to an advertisers website, you add it into the options panel and it does it automatically. Buddy Love - This plug-in allows snippets from recent posts of links on your blogroll to be displayed. I’m currently switching the “Around the Web” plug-in on the right side to feature this plug-in so look out for it there in the next day or two. Twitter This - I have to admit, I haven’t even looked at Twitter yet, but I hear everyone loves it This will be a good plug-in for those of you who know your reader base uses twitter. Allow them to share your blog posts on twitter. WP Polls - This plug-in allows you to easily integrate polls on your website. I find that this works really well on the sidebar, especially if you’re updating the poll once per week and then making a post with the results. It will help keep your visitors eyes on your sidebar, which in turn is great for advertising. [...]

324[...] I just added a bunch of new plugins that do fabulous things. Specifically: I now send you a welcoming email when you first comment, you can now subscribe to comments (so you can find out when someone replies to your comments),you can also unsubscribe from receiving comments on a post, we have threaded commenting (which means you can reply specifically to one person’s comment, not just add your comment to the end of a long line of them), and if you’ve posted more than 10 comments, and you put your own URL in when you comment, it will count toward your Google ranking. (Most blogs put in what is called a “nofollow” tag on links from blog commenters, which tells search engines not to count that as a link to your site. Normally when they see a lot of of links to your site, they think you are more important and move you up the list of search results, but it doesn’t work with a lot of blog commenting, because they don’t want people to artificially raise their ranking by just commenting a ton.) Furthermore, you can edit your own comments or delete them, and you can see recent comments in the sidebar. [...]

335[...] My Top 5 Plugin’s Nearly every site you go to, or forums that you go to, you will always find someone asking what plugin’s do you use, or plugin is best for SEO or monetization. So with out further ado, I give you My Top 5 Plugin’s, all of which I use and find I couldn’t live without. All-in-one SEO This plugin is a must have for any blogger who wants traffic from the search engines. This plugin sorts all of your SEO for your posts when you have typed it and are ready to publish. It adds an extra field to the editing screen which allows you to add the title of your post and a description of your post. These are what will appear in the search engines results, so make sure that you have your keywords in your title and your description. This plugin also allows you to list your keywords for your posts. Shylock Adsense The Shylock Adsense plugin makes it easy for you to insert your Adsense ads to your posts. This plugin is what I am using to have the ads that you see in the top of this post without having to go through all of the hassle of coding it in there myself. Subscribe Remind Subscribe Remind is the plugin that adds the little phrase at the bottom of each post that reminds my readers to subscribe to my RSS feed. There is no harm in trying to get as many RSS readers as possible and each little reminder is a good thing. Ultimate Google Analytics For stats and visitor tracking, this plugin has it all. If you want to keep an eye on your blogs stats this is the perfect plugin. Google analytics is one of the best there is and it has everything you need for your sites stats. Comment Relish This little plugin adds a nice touch to the site. When you have a new visitor to your site and they leave a comment on one of your posts this plugin send an email to your reader thanking them for their comment. This is only sent when they first comment on your site. I think it gives a nice personal touch. Mike My Top 5 Plugin’s [...]

347[...] Comment Relish is a great way to encourage interaction between your site’s readers and authors. The concept is pretty simple: each time a new person comments on your website, this plugin automatically sends them an email of your devising. You could theoretically use this plugin to inform your new community members of just about anything – a new e-book, perhaps, or other sites you run that they might be interested in visiting. I’m currently using it to thank my users for their comment and encourage them to comment again (and subscribe to my feed, if they haven’t done so already). [...]

349Just wanted to give a quick thanks for developing this plugin - it works great!
I did notice a few minor things that I had to change. In the calls to the input/textarea fields on the configuration, you used php short tags. It worked on my server okay, but it may not on everyone’s. The other issue I discovered was the insertion of backslashes in the textarea if an apostrophe or quotemark is used in the thank-you message. Every time the message is edited, another backslash was added. The backslashes were also being transmitted in the email. I changed the code for both the textarea and the message call for the email to add ’stripslashes’, and that solved the problem.
If you’d like to take a look at my code changes, drop me an email and I’ll forward them on to you. Maybe you can include them in the next update of this plugin.
Again, thanks!

440Hello, I’m running the version 1.0 of Comment relish (the one with slight adjustments due to database-load).
Unfortunately there seems to be a pretty serious issue: the plugin sends out an email EVERY time a user comments. For instance I get an email everytime I comment on my own blog.
In the options it says: “Intended Purpose: Send a relishing, thank-you e-mail message to new commentors on your weblog. When a user comments on your blog, if they have never commented before, they will be sent the message specified below.”
So it should only send it the first time. This seems to be a serious bug. Can I do anything about it?
Thank you for a otherwise great plugin! :)

480I just tested this plugin because a fellow blogger had a problem with sending mail that contains cyrillic symbols. What I found is that the mails sent from the plugin do not contain content-type header and no charset is specified. My solution is to change line 245 from this:
if (FALSE == mail($l_Author->comment_author_email, cr_format_email($l_RelishSubject, $l_Author), cr_format_email($l_RelishMessage, $l_Author), $l_Headers)) {
to this:
if (FALSE == wp_mail($l_Author->comment_author_email, cr_format_email($l_RelishSubject, $l_Author), cr_format_email($l_RelishMessage, $l_Author), $l_Headers)) {
The change is in the function that sends the mail - instead of the build in php function mail() I use the WordPress function wp_mail(), which uses phpmailer class and is pluggable, so other plugins may overwrite it (if for example someone needs to send email via SMTP).

518Hi,
This is a great plug-in, thank you!
I only have one grievance; every time that I post a comment on the same post, I get a new e-mail (responder).
I have to be honest and say, that is a bit annoying. So, my question is this, is there a way to only send “one” e-mail for each e-mail address (poster), per post?
I see no reason why someone should get an e-mail for every comment they leave on a given post, however, if they can be sent one e-mail per post, then that would be great.
It seems to me that you would need to create a variable that would store each e-mail address per post.
Pseudo code:
If this post has been commented by an e-mail address, and sent a an e-mail, then ignore
Else
Send e-mail
I would like that!
Thank you,
Mark

531Help! I’ve installed the plugin successfully but when I click on ’settings’ I get the following message: “Cannot load wpcomment-relish.php.”
What to do? Thanks for your help.
