A variety of RSS feeds are available for subscriptions. Use the selection of feeds below to stay up-to-date with the content being added here. Use the feed for the articles (and their comments), one for my bookmarks, using social-bookmarker del.icio.us, my photos on flickr and what I’m currently listening to, courtesy of last.fm.

What is RSS?

RSS feeds are used for website syndication, most commonly seen with blogs, but they are now being seen used more often, for anything from news to photos to forums, et cetera. They are both XML documents that can be used with applications commonly known as “feed readers”. These come as both applications on your operating systems or as websites.

You can read more about RSS feeds at this article, entitled Why Aren’t You Using RSS?.

Which feed reader should I use?

This is up to your own personal preference — however — below I have supplied a quick list of freeware feed readers available to several different operating systems:

  • Feedreader (Windows) is a freeware Windows application that reads and displays Atom and RSS feeds.
  • NetNewsWire Lite (Mac) is a freeware edition of the commercial NetNewsWire program. Its so-called “Lite” feature set practically defines the newsreader industry standard.
  • Akregator (*nix) is a KDE RSS/Atom feed reader and aggregator.
  • Bloglines is a free web-based feed reader that will run on any operating system that has a browser with JavaScript and cookies enabled. Bloglines comes with lots of features including publishing the list of websites you are subscribed too. Bloglines is my recommendation.
  • Mozilla Firefox & Thunderbird are two freeware, multi-platform applications that both come with built in feed readers.
  • Yutter is something pretty new to the feed world, however, it offers an excellent method for subscribing and reading entries via email. If you’re too lazy to visit the site everyday, just subscribe with yutter!
